Justin Champagnie scored 31 points and pulled down 14 rebounds as Pitt survived Duke last night, 79-73. The Panthers almost lost a 15-point second half lead, which the Blue Devils trimmed to two with a late run.
Au’Diese Toney had 22 points and 11 rebounds and he and the rest of the Pitt defense stifled Duke star Matthew Hurt, holding him to only 13 points.
Coach Jeff Capel was proud of his team’s determination.
It was the first time Capel has beaten his former coach and mentor, Mike Kryzewski, but he said that wasn’t important to him.
Coach K said the Panthers, and Champagnie, are a handful.
Pitt is 8-2 and 4-1 in the ACC. The Panthers are next scheduled at Boston College on Saturday evening at 6 o’clock.
