Indiana Borough’s Police Chief gave an update on the borough’s enforcement efforts concerning Governor Wolf’s temporary Covid-19 orders issued earlier this month.
In a statement, Chief Justin Schawl said that while the borough police does have the authority to enforce the Governor’s mandates, and they have investigated reported and observed violations within Indiana Borough and continue to do so, they have not issued any citations for “acts of defiance of public safety orders” but he did say that it remains an option.
He acknowledged that Covid-19 mitigation measures have become a divisive topic as the pandemic goes on, but it is not their intent to disrespect anyone or any businesses with their approach. He did say that the issue is probably the most difficult that he and his officers have dealt with.
While the police department will try to remain flexible and look for positive community impacts as they have in the past, Schawl said that in moments like this, they may not be able to produce a response that would be accepted as a positive response by everyone.
