Another retrenchment deadline passed this week for several state-owned universities, including IUP, but there were no new notifications of job losses.
In addition to IUP, Cheyney, Edinboro, Lock Haven, and Mansfield all have active retrenchment possibilities, but none of them made a move on Tuesday, which was the deadline for notifying any second-year probationary non-tenured faculty.
APSCUF, the faculty union, says there is one more deadline, by contract. It’s for first-year probationary non-tenured faculty members, who must be notified by March 1st. The most retrenchment letters were issued for tenured faculty at the October 30th deadline, when the five schools issued 113 letters. By far, IUP had the most faculty members receive letters of retrenchment, 81. One more IUP retrenchment letter was sent by the December 1st deadline for probationary non-tenured teachers beyond their second year.
APSCUF says some of the letters have been rescinded, but there are still 101 faculty members whose jobs are in peril. Some of those who received letters initially will be able to keep their jobs because others have chosen to retire.
Retrenchment would take effect at the end of the spring semester.
