Jeff Capel’s Pitt basketball team will open its ACC schedule tonight against an injury-plagued Miami team in south Florida. The Hurricanes will be without three starters and as many as six players overall. Star guard Chris Lykes is out with an ankle injury, and Miami will also be missing starters Kam McGusty and Matt Cross, and 7-foot reserve center Rodney Miller, 6-11 forward Deng Gak, and 6-7 forward Matt Cross.
The Hurricanes problems notwithstanding, Capel says the Panthers, who are riding a four-game winning streak, have to play better. He’s relied on big contributions from his freshmen this season, but says non-conference games are nothing like ACC games.
Pitt is 4-1. Miami is 3-1. The game tips off at 6 o’clock tonight on WCCS.

Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett says he is coming back for one more season with the Panthers. He announced on Twitter he will take advantage of the NCAA’s one-time eligibility waiver. Pickett has been the starting QB since the last game of the 2017 season, but was slowed by an ankle injury that cost him several games. He finished the season with 2,408 yards, 13 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
The Panthers were 6-3 in games Pickett started this year, including a loss to Boston College in which he was injured. He had ankle surgery and returned three games later.
