During their meeting Tuesday night, the Blairsville-Saltsburg School Board hired a familiar person to be their new superintendent.
The board hired Philip Martel as the new superintendent, offering him to a five-year agreement with a yearly salary of $150,000. Martel is a familiar name to the board and to the district , according to Board member Rick Harper.
Martel will start immediately.
In other business, the board approved a resolution not to raise taxes above the state mandated index for the district, which is 4.1 percent. Harper said that the goal is to never raise taxes, but due to increased costs in cyberschool and decreased revenue due to the pandemic, it may be difficult to go without a tax increase. Discussions on how the district can save money are already underway.
During the reorganization meeting, Harper was re-elected as Board President, while Molly Stiles was re-elected as board vice-president.
