The Pirates’ offseason roster shuffle continued yesterday with the team avoiding arbitration and signing shortstop Erik Gonzalez to a one-year, $1.225 million contract, right-hander Jameson Taillon to a one-year $2.25 million deal, and right-handed reliever Michael Feliz to a one-year deal worth $1 million.
Both Taillon and Feliz missed time last season with arm injuries, Taillon recovering from his second Tommy John surgery and Feliz with right forearm pain.
The Bucs also nontendered reliever Clay Holmes, making him a free agent, and first baseman Will Craig cleared waivers and was sent to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Baseball’s Winter Meetings happen virtually this weekend and the Pirates are expected to be active in the trade market. With a surplus of infielders, the most likely trade candidates are second baseman Adam Frazier and pitcher Joe Musgrove, but GM Ben Cherington could also be looking to move Colin Moran, shortstop Gonzalez and Kevin Newman, or pitcher Steven Brault.
