Former Pirates first base coach Tommy Sandt passed away yesterday at the age of 69. He spent 21 years as a coach in the Pirates organization. Sandt coached and managed in the Bucs’ minor league system before joining Jim Leyland’s staff in 1987.
Leyland said, “We really lost a great guy, a very close friend and a great coach.”
Pirates broadcaster Greg Brown tweeted yesterday that Sandt was “a brilliant baseball man and as humble as they come.” Brown called him a “great friend and mentor.”
Former Bucs catcher Jason Kendall tweeted that Sandt was “one of the greatest men I knew.”
