Pennsylvania’s rifle deer season began yesterday and for the first time ever, will feature Sunday hunting today. The traditional start of deer season is the Monday after Thanksgiving, but the legislature authorized the Saturday start this year and Sunday hunting on three days: archery deer on November 15th, bear last Sunday, and rifle deer today. The bill was signed into law last November.
Bear season concluded, for the most part, last Wednesday and the preliminary harvest figure for Indiana County is 29. Neighboring Clearfield County was third in the state, with 156 bears taken, including the fourth-largest bear, a 633-pounder. Jefferson County had 76, Armstrong County 54, Westmoreland County 30, and Cambria County 22. Potter County led the state with 177.
The final statistics for bear season will be released in a couple of months. There are areas of Pennsylvania which will have extended bear season this month.
