State police report that they have been investigating a handful of identity thefts that have happened in the last couple of weeks.
The incidents date back to November 16th, when a 62-year-old Homer City man reported that $981.56 was stolen from his debit card. Police say that the incident happened on Swan Road in Armstrong Township. On that same day, troopers reported that an unknown person used the identity and debit card information of a 61-year-old Homer City woman to create an account on Walmart’s website and used that account to buy $473 worth of items, which were then shipped to another address.
Police also reported two other identity thefts with similar modes of operation on November 24th as unknown suspects used the Social Security numbers of an 86-year-old Indiana woman and a 45-year-old Indiana man to create government-related accounts. The info for the woman was used to take out a disaster services loan from the U.S. Small Business Administration, while the man’s information was used to open an unemployment account. Both victims not only notified police, but they notified the organizations where the accounts were created and terminated the accounts. No money was lost in either incident.
