Bear hunting season started on Saturday, and the Pennsylvania Game Commission is helping those keeping track of the harvest with a new map.
The map is featured on the commission’s website, and as of this morning, it shows that 901 bears have been taken across the state during the firearms season so far. Early archery season for Wildlife Management Units 2B, 5C and 5D brought in 17 bears and the combined bear season, which is archery, muzzle-loader and simple firearms, brought in 1961 bears for the 2020 season.
In Indiana County, 25 bears have been brought in so far. The county with the highest bear harvest so far has been Potter County with 162 bears taken. The largest bear brought in was an estimated 719 pound bear in Fulton County.
