Despite the recommendation from the PIAA that schools begin practicing for winter sports today, some of the schools in the area are delaying. With a 15-practice minimum before a team can play a game, that would push back the start of the season to December 22nd.
Here are the start dates for Indiana and the Heritage Conference schools:
- Penns Manor, Northern Cambria, Blairsville, and Saltsburg will begin today (some could still decide to delay).
- Marion Center will begin practices on December 4, but will reevaluate at that time.
- Indiana, Homer Center, Purchase Line, and West Shamokin will begin on December 7.
Citing his work demands as Ligonier Borough police chief, John Berger has resigned as coach of the Ligonier Valley boys’ basketball team. Berger will be replaced by girls’ coach Tim Gustin, with athletic director Wesley Siko coaching the girls on an interim basis. Siko tells the Tribune-Review that he hopes to have a new girls’ coach in place in time for school board approval on December 2nd. The school is currently in full remote learning, including suspension of all athletic activities, so it will not be until December that the first winter sports practices can begin, which will delay the start of their seasons.
