Major League baseball has announced the players eligible for consideration for the Baseball Hall of Fame, and former Pirates A.J. Burnett and Aramis Ramirez are first-timers on the list. Burnett played three of his 17 seasons with the Bucs and Ramirez started and ended his career with the Pirates, playing for the Cubs and the Brewers in between.
Other first-timers on the list are pitchers Mark Buehrle, Dan Haren, LaTroy Hawkins, Tim Hudson and Barry Zito, Michael Cuddyer, who was primarily a first baseman, and outfielders Torii Hunter, Nick Swisher and Shane Victorino.
Returning candidates are Barry Bonds, Bobby Abreu, Roger Clemens, Todd Helton, Andruw Jones, Jeff Kent, Andy Pettitte, Manny Ramirez, Scott Rolen, Curt Schilling, Gary Sheffield, Sammy Sosa, Omar Vizquel and Billy Wagner.
Players must receive 75 percent of the vote to make the Hall of Fame. Last year, Derek Jeter and Larry Walker were voted in, but their induction was delayed until next year because of the pandemic.
The San Diego Padres have signed pitcher Mike Clevinger to a two-year contract despite the right-hander needing Tommy John surgery. The 29-year-old will have the operation today and will miss all of the 2021 season. The Padres got Clevinger from the Indians in a multi-player deal at the trade deadline last season.
