UPDATE: Simere Alford’s sentencing hearing has been delayed due to Coronavirus-related concerns. Indiana County District Attorney Robert Manzi has said the new hearing date has not been set yet.
WHAT WE PREVIOUSLY REPORTED
In Indiana County Court, sentencing is scheduled today for 21-year-old Simere Alford, the Philadelphia man who was convicted in September for attempting to kill two state troopers who were transporting him to SCI Pine Grove in White Township last year.
Alford will be sentenced for two counts each of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault, assault of an officer, assault by a prisoner, and reckless endangerment. In addition, he was found guilty of single counts of robbery, theft, illegal possession of a firearm, institutional vandalism, disarming an officer, attempted escape, and resisting arrest.
On June 24th of last year, Alford was being transported back to the prison from the district court in Clymer when he broke free from his back-seat restraint, reached into the front seat and grabbed the gun of Trooper Jeremy Leasure. He fired a shot that missed Leasure’s head and the trooper grabbed the gun as Alford fired a second shot, which hit Alford in the leg. Leasure had let go of the steering wheel and the vehicle hit the guiderail. Trooper Allison Goswick got out and opened the door as Leasure and Alford fought. Leasure disarmed Alford and forced him to the ground. Both troopers were injured in the crash.
Alford is serving 13 to 40 years for the 2017 suffocation death of his sister. He’s due before President Judge William Martin at 8:30 this morning.
