The Pittsburgh Pirates have claimed catcher Michael Perez off of waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays.
The 28-year-old Puerto Rico native batted .167 with three doubles, a homer and 13 RBIs in 38 games last season and was 2 of 7 with three RBI’s during the playoffs. Perez is best known for his defensive play as he was able to throw out six out of 19 baserunners this season and 27 percent of runners over three seasons with the Rays.
The Pirates optioned infielder-outfielder Kevin Kramer, catcher Luke Maile, right-handed pitcher Yacksel Rios and outfielder Jason Martin along with Backup catcher John Ryan Murphy, who cleared waivers.
