The WPIAL Triple-A Soccer playoff game between Indiana and Franklin Regional had an international audience on Wednesday as the game was seen by parents of opposing players who are currently stationed together in Kuwait.
John Fefolt, the father of I.H.S. Senior goalkeeper Sam Fefolt and Megan Dawson, stepmother of Franklin Regional sophomore midfielder and defender Sam Dawson, were able to watch a live stream of the game as they were stationed over 6,500 miles away from Murrysville, where the game was played. As part of the pre-game ceremonies, both teams paid tribute to the parents as both Fefolt and Dawson went out to midfield for the national anthem as a surprise acknowledgement to their parents. Franklin Regional coach Rand Hudson said they wanted to pay tribute to Dawson’s stepmother, but when he found out of Fefolt’s father, a tribute was put together very quickly and organized for the playoff game.
John Fefolt is a member of the National Guard and a UH-60 Blackhawk instructor pilot and maintenance test pilot currently assigned as a Battalion Aviation Officer deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Kosovo. Megan Dawson is a Chief Warrant Officer 3, deployed with the PA National Guard as a Black Hawk Medivac Pilot supporting operations in Iraq, Syria and Jordan.
