The Pennsylvania House of Representatives yesterday failed to override Governor Tom Wolf’s veto of a bill that concerned restrictions on restaurants.
House Bill 2513 was vetoed by Governor Wolf on Friday. The bill would have loosened restrictions on restaurants and bars by allowing restaurants to open at full capacity, revoking a mandate that would force patrons to buy food if they were buying an alcoholic beverage, and allowing people to sit at the bar provided that social distancing guidelines were followed. The bill was meant as a measure to help establishments that were negatively impacted by the Coronavirus shutdowns and restrictions.
The vote to override the governor’s veto came to 133 votes in favor of the override and 69 against. That’s two votes short of the number needed to override the veto at 135. Twelve Democrats who originally voted in favor of the bill voted against overriding the veto.
This marks the second time in about a month that a veto override has failed in the state house. The other bill was House Bill 2787, which would have allowed school districts to decide how many fans can attend high school sports events. The override vote at that time failed as 25 state house members flipped their vote.
