NBA
The Los Angeles Lakers tied the Boston Celtics for the most championships in NBA history, beating the Miami Heat 106-93 in Game Six of the Finals last night for title number seventeen. LeBron James had a 28-point triple-double for LA, earning his fourth career title and his fourth career Finals MVP Award.
James and teammate Danny Green became only the third and fourth players in NBA history to win championships with three teams. Robert Horry and John Salley each won with three different teams. James also became the first player to be Finals MVP for three different teams.
MLB
Mike Zunino snapped a 1-all tie with an RBI single in the fifth and the Rays held on to edge the Astros 2-1 in Game One of the AL Championship Series in San Diego. Jose Altuve homered for Houston and Randy Arozarena hit one for Tampa Bay. Blake Snell went five innings for the win.
Charlie Morton is on the mound for the Rays this afternoon for Game Two (4:07PM), against Astros right-hander Lance McCullers Jr.
The National League Championship Series gets started tonight (8:08 PM). The Braves and Dodgers play Game One with Atlanta starting Max Fried against the Dodgers’ Walker Buehler.
PGA
Martin Laird rolled in a 23-footer for birdie on the second playoff hole to win the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas. Laird held off Austin Cook and Matthew Wolff. All three finished regulation at 23-under.
NASCAR
Chase Elliott won his fourth straight NASCAR road-course race, holding off Joey Logano to win at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Four racers were eliminated from the championship chase, including defending champion Kyle Busch. Kevin Harvick leads the points standings with Denny Hamlin second headed into the round of eight.
TENNIS
Rafael Nadal beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets to win the French Open. Rafa is now tied with Roger Federer for most career Grand Slam championships, with twenty. It was his thirteenth French Open title.
