UPDATE: James Eugene Brown was ordered to serve 4-10 years in state prison for homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, 1-2 years in state prison for accidents involving death, and 90 days for driving on a DUI-suspended license. Judge Thomas Bianco said that the sentences in this case would run consecutively. A fourth charge of DUI was combined with the homicide by vehicle charge.
For the receiving stolen property case, Brown was ordered to serve two years of probation, to run concurrent to the other sentences.
WHAT WE PREVIOUSLY REPORTED:
Sentencing is set for today for a man who pleaded guilty to charges related to a fatal crash in 2018.
35-year-old James Eugene Brown is scheduled to face Indiana County Judge Thomas Bianco today to be sentenced in connection with the crash at Pikel’s Top Tier Fuels in Home on July 5th, 2018 that killed 52-year-old Melissa Myers of Commodore. Brown was behind the wheel of the car that ran over a gas pump and smashed into the building. The car and building both burst into flames, trapping and killing Myers, who was working at the station. Brown would later tell police that he had taken heroin and smoked marijuana before driving.
On July 24th, Brown entered guilty pleas to homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, DUI-controlled substance, and driving while his blood alcohol level was .02 percent or higher. Other charges that were filed against him included homicide by vehicle, aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI, and seven other summary-level crimes.
Brown will have a second sentencing hearing today for a guilty plea in a case of receiving stolen property for an incident on May 8th of 2018.
