The PA Department of Environmental Protection has announced they have awarded $4.9 million in grants to help restore impaired watersheds, and one of the projects is in Indiana County.
The Section 319 Non Point Source Management grants are meant to support projects that are meant to reduce pollution in the watersheds. Non point source pollution is water pollution that does not come from a single specific discharge point, like a pipe. According to a news release, the grants will focus on reducing nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment pollution associated with agriculture activities, urban storm water, and stream bank and shore line erosion. The grants will also focus on reducing iron, aluminum, and acidity pollution associated with energy resource extraction and acid mine drainage.
The Indiana Conservation district will receive $283,871 in grant money to reduce sediment inputs into the South Branch Plum Creek and Leasure Run sub watershed in East and South Mahoning Townships. This will be done through stream bank stabilization and rotational grazing systems.
