The New York Rangers took Alexis LaFreniere number one overall in Tuesday’s first round of the NHL Draft out of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
The Penguins didn’t have a first-round draft pick this season, having traded it to Toronto as part of the deal to bring Kasperi Kapanen back to Pittsburgh. They also don’t have a second-round pick, having traded that away three years ago in the Marc Andre Fluery expansion deal with Las Vegas. The Penguins will pick 77th overall in the third round today.
The second round of the NHL draft begins today at 11:30 a.m.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman says the league and the players association have settled on January 1st for the opening date of the 2020-2021 season. Previously, the league had identified December 1st as the potential opening date.
Bettman said they still hope to play a full 82-game schedule and have fans in the arenas. One big obstacle to overcome is whether or not the U.S.-Canadian border will be open. The league could consider an all-Canadian division if crossing the border is too much of a hassle.
