The first in a series of public hearings concerning the fate of the former G.C. Murphy Co. building lot in Blairsville will be held tonight.
Tonight’s meeting will be held on Zoom video chat starting at 6:00 and is a joint event of the Blairsville Community Development Authority and the Indiana County Office of Planning and Development. The former Murphy building was torn down as it was seen as a safety hazard in Downtown Blairsville, and it is now a vacant lot with grass in it. David Janusek with Blairsville Borough said that a plan needs to be put in place for the short- and long-term future of the property.
For now, the property must remain a green space. Requirements for some of the funding used to tear down the building forces the property to remain as a green space for a period of seven years. Molly Sarver of the Office of Planning and Development said that doesn’t necessarily mean it will remain just a vacant lot with grass growing in it.
Another meeting to collect ideas for the lot will be held later this year, and a third will make a presentation of the group’s findings.
