The Pirates’ season is over and baseball playoff schedule is set.
Greg Brown has a recap of yesterday’s loss to Cleveland.
The Pirates finish with a record of 19-41, the worst record in baseball, and they “earn” the number-one choice in next year’s MLB draft. That is expected to be Vanderbilt pitcher Kumar Rocker.
On the Ben Cherington Show yesterday on WCCS before the game, the Pirates’ GM said there is “not a single piece of evidence” that minor league shortstop O’Neil Cruz was driving under the influence when his vehicle collided with a motorcycle, killing all three of the people on the bike last week. Cruz’s attorney said the Dominican Republic authorities released a false report that Cruz was DUI. The accident happened after 9 PM, which was past the curfew in the DR, and the motorcycle was operating without lights in the darkness.
The Major League Baseball playoff matchups are set. The best-of-three wild card round starts tomorrow in the American League with the Yankees at the Indians, the Astros at the Twins, the Blue Jays at the Rays and White Sox at A’s.
The NL wild card series start Wednesday. The top seeded Dodgers host Milwaukee in LA. San Diego will host the Cardinals. The Marlins visit the Cubs and the Reds play the Braves.
