The Indiana School Board got some good news concerning the 2019-2020 budget during Monday night’s meeting.
The board’s Audit and Finance committee reported that they are preparing for the upcoming audit of the 2019-2020 budget, and after going through all the numbers, the district is looking at a $1.4 million budget surplus. The committee had predicted a $1.8 million deficit. Audit and Finance Committee Chair Julia Trimarchi-Cuccaro said that the importance of this swing should not be underplayed.
District Business Manager Jared Cronauer said there wasn’t one specific area that could be attributed to the big swing, but he said that the district did realize some savings when schools were shut down near the end of the school year in areas of transportation, personnel, and outside services.
In other business, the board was informed that Indiana County’s Covid-19 status went down from substantial to moderate as of 3:00 PM on Monday. The upgraded health and safety plan, which was approved Monday night, will look at incident based cases to determine if the school can remain open, but it also subtracts the community transmission rate. This will allow it to make decisions based on the number of incidents in the district. Superintendent Michael Vuckovich said that the plan continues to be within the guidelines of the PA Department of Health.
