Twenty-four Democrats in the state House of Representatives flipped their votes as the House failed to get the two-thirds majority needed to overturn Governor Tom Wolf’s veto of a bill that would allow school districts to decide if sports will be held and how many people can attend sporting events instead of statewide mandates.
Earlier this month, House Bill 2787 passed the State House by a 155-47 vote. After it passed the Senate, Governor Tom Wolf waited until the last possible day to veto the bill and send it back to the State House. Yesterday, the vote went differently, as the tally was 130-71 in favor of the bill, which was five votes short what was needed to overturn the Governor’s veto. State representatives Jim Struzzi, Cris Dush, Jeffrey Pyle and Joseph Petrarca all voted in favor of the bill.
Struzzi said in a statement that he was disappointed to see that some of his house colleagues went back to partisan politics, saying that they went back on their promise to students and families after many of them voted to pass the bill. He added that “By choosing to uphold this veto, this experience is severely lessened for the student athletes and their families.”
Struzzi said that he will continue to fight to get control back to the communities.
