The Steelers’ banged-up offensive line may get some help this week.
Head coach Mike Tomlin said the plan is to have guard David DeCastro get treatment on his injured knee this week and depending on the quality of his participation during the week, that will determine his availability for Sunday.
Kevin Dotson started at right guard this past weekend in place of both DeCastro and Stefen Wisniewski. The Steelers will take on JJ Watt and the Houston Texans on Sunday at Heinz Field.
Tomlin answered questions during his weekly press conference yesterday, and said the team’s interest in wide receiver Chase Claypool began at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, in January. Claypool became the team’s top draft pick, in the second round this year, and has been a breakout star through the first two games.
Tomlin also commented on Ben Roethlisberger’s comeback from elbow surgery, saying he’s pleased with what he’s seen so far, but he’s anticipating even better play from the quarterback.
After being penalized 10 times for 89 yards, some of them very costly on Sunday, Tomlin says the Steelers are bringing in NFL officials this week at Steelers’ practices, in an effort to help players understand why a penalty is a penalty. He’s done it in the past. He says his team is not good enough to overcome all those flags and keep winning games.
The Steelers’ injury list still includes DeCastro, along with linebacker Bud Dupree, nose tackle Tyson Alualu, and wide receiver Diontae Johnson, who will be limited in practice today.
Big Dan McCullers has terminated his practice squad contract with the Steelers, meaning he could be headed to another team’s active roster.
Saints coach Sean Payton and Raiders coach Jon Gruden are being fined $100,000 for not wearing their masks properly on the sidelines. So are 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and the Broncos Vic Fangio. Their teams are all being fined $250,000.
