On Tuesday night, Indiana Borough Council approved an resolution condemning the confederate flag.
The main point of the resolution is that the confederate flag is “inconsistent with the values of the borough, our commonwealth and the United States.” Council member Sara Stewart said she was concerned about how minority students at IUP would react to see the confederate flag and other forms of racism in the community. The resolution is based off of a similar resolution in Ebensburg. She said that the resolution is not an outright ban.
While she didn’t disagree with the notion of the resolution, council member Kaycee Newell said she didn’t want to see people put more confederate flags out on display as a sign of protest.
After a motion to table the resolution for further discussion failed to pass, the board unanimously approved the resolution.
