Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf announced yesterday that he would officially veto a bill that passed the state house and senate with bi-partisan support concerning allowing people to attend high school sporting events.
As of right now, limitations are in place for attending high school sports events, with attendance limited to 25 people or less for indoor events and for 250 people or less for outdoor events. That number would include all the participants, coaches and officials. The state legislature had passed House Bill 2787, which would have allowed school districts to make the decision on whether or not to hold sporting events and how many people could be in attendance. Wolf said yesterday that the crowd size limitations his administration has put into effect, and further recommendation that high school sports be delayed until January 1st of 2021 at the earliest, are coronavirus mitigation measures.
In a statement on his Facebook page, State Representative Jim Struzzi said he was disappointed by the Governor’s decision. He said that it would have a negative impact on the athletic experience for both parents and their children, and that “these children deserve to look up into the stands to see the love and support from their families when on the field.”
Legislators are looking to hold a vote to overturn the Governor’s veto as soon as possible.
