The Pirates defense cost them the first game of a double-header against Cincinatti on Friday at PNC Park, but they were able to capitalize on some errors by the Reds to take game two.
In the 4-2 game one loss, the Pirates committed an error in their sixth straight game, With a runner on first base and two outs in the second, Curt Casali hit a soft liner toward first baseman Josh Bell. The ball went off Bell’s glove and the inning continued, and Jose Garcia hit an RBI Single to left to put Cincinatti ahead 1-0. Other mistakes lead to the Pirates loss.
In game two, Ke’Bryan Hayes had another strong showing in the 4-3 win with a triple and a single off of Reds starter Trevor Bauer. Anthony Alford, though, was the big contributor as he hit a sharp line drive to center field in the 4th inning that was bobbled, and it scored Hayes and Colin Moran. Anthony Alford scored on a wild pitch later in the inning. In the 5th, Brian Reynolds grounded into a double-play, but the play allowed Kevin Newman to score.
