Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said yesterday that his defense, as is customary, is coming together quicker than his offense. One of the keys to the highly-rated defense is linebacker Bud DuPree, who is coming off a career year and playing under the franchise tag. Tomlin says he expects DuPree to continue to step up in 2020.
Tomlin says the Steelers had a good day at practice yesterday, but there are a lot of players dealing with minor injuries and easing their way back into workouts. Guard David DeCastro missed practice again, but Mike Tomlin wasn’t overly concerned, saying he’s hopeful the Pro Bowler will be back soon. DeCastro has missed just two regular-season games because of injury since November 2013. Among those limited yesterday were wideout Diontae Johnson, slot receiver Ryan Switzer, running back Wendell Smallwood, and safety Terrell Edmunds.
The coach also commented on the absence of Ryan Shazier from camp, saying he’s going through some transitions in his life and will hopefully be back at some time. He also talked extensively about the passing of legendary Georgetown basketball coach John Thompson, whom Tomlin said was a mentor for him.
