Sunday was the final public mass for Greensburg Catholic Diocese Bishop Edward Malesic as he prepares to transition to his new post in the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland.
Malesic has served as the bishop for the Greensburg Catholic Diocese for the last five years. During that time, he has guided the diocese through some tough times, including the opioid epidemic, the clergy child sex abuse scandal, and through the first part of the Coronavirus outbreak. Under normal circumstances, more than 800 parishioners would be able to attend at the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Greensburg, but because of Covid-19 regulations, the attendance was limited to less than 100 people, who represented each of the 78 parishes in the diocese that serves Westmoreland, Indiana, Armstrong and Fayette Counties. The mass was live streamed on the diocese’s website and Facebook pages to be viewed by those who were not able to attend mass in person.
In his remarks, Malesic viewed the new assignment in Cleveland as a challenge he was looking forward to, but he also sad to say goodbye to a diocese that he called home since April of 2015.
The diocese will be operated by an administrator that will be chosen by a special committee no later than eight days of Malesic’s installation as the Bishop in the Cleveland diocese. That administrator will serve until Pope Francis names a new bishop.
