In part one of a new documentary called “Bigger Than Ben”, Dr. James Bradley says Ben Roethlisberger’s elbow injury last year was so severe, it was potentially career-ending. In Week Two of the 2019 season, Big Ben tore three of the five flexor tendons completely off the bone in his right elbow.
The 15-minute “part one” features Ben, his wife, Ashley, and Dr. Bradley, and also touches on the quarterback’s reaction to a deluge of criticism of his leadership and his relationship with late receiver’s coach Darryl Drake, who died suddenly last year in training camp. Roethlisberger says Drake helped him return to his faith in God and became one of his closest friends.
Steelers GM Kevin Colbert says the team has always had faith in Ben’s ability to return, based on the quarterback’s own determination. And he says that faith has been rewarded.
Colbert also commented yesterday on the challenge of evaluating the Steelers’ young talent, with no exhibition games. He says the players will have to show they can play right away, starting in Week One against the Giants.
The Steelers had the day off yesterday.
