The Pirates will play a makeup doubleheader today in St. Louis before jetting to Milwaukee for a weekend series against the revenge-minded Brewers. Chad Kuhl will start the opener for Pittsburgh this afternoon. The Cards will counter with Kwang Hyun Kim. Cody Ponce will make his first big league start in the second game for the Pirates. The airtime is 2:50, with first pitch at 3:15 on WCCS.
The Pirates acquired left-handed reliever Austin Davis from the Phillies for cash and a player to be named later. The 27-year-old was 0-0 with a 21.0 ERA in four appearances for Philly this season. He is 1-and-2 with a 5.86 ERA in 50 career major league appearances.
A day after it appeared Colin Moran and Keone Kela were available to play, Pirates’ director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said they both are not yet cleared. Moran is in concussion protocol and Kela has a tight forearm. Tomczyk said starter Joe Musgrove is scheduled to throw two innings at Altoona as he rehabs from a triceps strain. Injured pitcher Mitch Keller threw a bullpen session and Kyle Crick threw live batting practice yesterday. Crick could return soon. Pitcher Yacksel Rios has thrown three consecutive days and “responded well.” And great news: Jameson Taillon is scheduled to throw a simulated game in Altoona as he continues his rehab from his second Tommy John elbow surgery.
