The PIAA Board of Directors voted on Friday to go forward with fall sports, but the delay caused by the back and forth between PIAA and Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf has impacted start dates, especially with small-school football conferences like the Heritage Conference.
Teams would be well into camp by this date, but now heat acclimation begins on Monday. The first games of the season will actually be the originally scheduled games for Week 3 on Sept. 11. The schedule will pick up at that point with all games through October 23rd remaining the same as what they were for a total of seven games.
Games originally scheduled for Aug. 28 have been moved to Oct. 30, and games originally scheduled for Sept. 4 have been moved to Nov. 6, bringing the schedule to a total of nine games.
A look at the first week (Sept. 11) of football competition, including Bishop Carroll, which is not a Heritage Conference team: Bishop Carroll at Northern Cambria; Homer-Center at United; Penns Manor at Blairsville; Purchase Line at West Shamokin; Saltsburg at Marion Center
The Heritage Conference/WestPac Crossover Weekend and Appalachian Bowl, originally scheduled for Oct. 30 and 31, have been cancelled.
If District 6 has playoff games scheduled for November 6th, some scheduled games may not be played, or teams could find a new opponent if they are not a playoff team and their scheduled opponent is. The district playoff field will be reduced and may not start until November 13th, with all Week 2 games being played on Nov. 6th. Therefore, the week of Nov. 6 is somewhat in flux.
Heritage Conference President Jody Rainey addressed the playoff situation.
Ultimately, the hope is that everyone would play nine regular season games.
As for Indiana and the WPIAL, the Lil Indians are also slated to begin with their Sept. 11 game. The regular season is scheduled to end on Oct. 23.
