Another sleepy night for the Pirates bats and yet another implosion by the bullpen as the Bucs dropped the second game of the Cleveland series at PNC Park.
The Pirates lost to the Indians, 6-1, and dropped to 4-16, the worst record in baseball with a .200 winning percentage.
Greg Brown recaps last night’s game.
Trevor Williams (1-3, 3.98 ERA) takes the mound tonight as the Pirates look to prevent the sweep. Shane Bieber (4-0, 1.30 ERA) throws for Cleveland. It’s a 6:40 airtime on WCCS.
Pirates Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk said yesterday that infielder Phillip Evans will have jaw surgery and his mouth will be wired shut. Evans is out for the season after a collision with Gregory Polanco while chasing a foul ball on August 8th. Tomczyk says the fracture has moved and the jaw has become more displaced.
Tomczyk said pitcher Joe Musgrove is ready to start throwing off a slope as he recovers from triceps and ankle injuries. Another starter, Mitch Keller, is a bit behind, throwing only on flat ground as he works his way back from an oblique muscle injury. Reliever Yacksel Rios has been shut down. At Altoona, James Marvel is working his way back from a right forearm strain. Injured relievers Nick Burdi, Michael Feliz, and Clay Holmes are out for the year and have been sent home. Starter Jameson Taillon “continues to dominate his rehab”, according to Tomczyk. He did not report on Chris Archer.
