The Homer-Center School Board reaffirmed their opening status at last night’s meeting, confirming in a 5-4 vote that they will go a green phase reopening.
While the green reopening plan will allow students to attend five days a week, parents will still have the options to go to online learning modes. During the discussion leading up to the vote, board vice-president Vicki Smith said that the choice should be up to the parents, and at that point, the district would not be liable.
One of those who voted against going to the green reopening was Mike Schmidt, who cited various reports of other districts across the United States going into green status and having to switch to blended or all online because of Covid-19 outbreaks. He added that by going to green, he felt that the district would be going against the recommendations of Governor Tom Wolf and Secretary of Health Dr. Rachael Levine among others.
The others who voted against the green status included Dr. Christa Pontani Palmer, Robert Valyo, and Gerald Bertig.
In other business, the board approved the use of Memorial Field for midget football and for football practice by the Homer City Boosters, provided that all rules and regulations are followed.
