Nate Davis pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings to lead Paul Carpenter to a 5-1 victory over Laurel Auto Group for the Johnstown Collegiate Baseball League championship on Friday at Sargent’s Stadium at the Point in Johnstown.
Davis, a Homer-Center graduate and IUP recruit, struck out seven and walked only one batter while giving up just four hits. He finished his season 6-0 with one save in Paul Carpenter’s 32-2 campaign.
“I knew it was my last game of the year and I talked to my IUP coach and he told me I could raise my pitch count, plus 10,” Davis told the Tribune-Democrat. “I knew I had to make a good show and win the last game of the year.”
In a dogpile celebration near the mound after the last out, Davis took more lumps than Laurel Auto Group could inflict.
“I took two knees off the face and (Josh) Spiegel’s leg protector hit me in the neck,” Davis said. “But it was worth it.”
