The Blairsville-Saltsburg School board met last night and approved the edits to the district’s Health and Safety plan.
The board acknowledged that the documents that cover both the return to school and the athletics and extracurricular activities are fluid documents and the board expects changes as soon as next week. Board President Rick Harper said that there is a Health and Safety Committee meeting set for next week to react to the changes that come up.
In other news, the district approved a memorandum of understanding concerning the minimum number of hours of education for the district. That M.O.U. will go to the state Department of Education, and it states that the district will make sure that the 180 days will be fulfilled for the district. That includes the minimum 900 hours for secondary students and just over 1000 hours for elementary students.
The board also heard a presentation concerning the district’s facilities and what they can and cannot handle as of this time. This is part of an ongoing discussion on the district’s possible reconfiguration. More topics will be covered over the next few months in advance of a public hearing on the reconfiguration in mid-October. The PowerPoint presentation from last night will be on the district’s website later today.
Finally, District Superintendent Jeffrey Soles submitted his resignation, which was accepted by the board. Soles said that he was hired as the Superintendent for the West Mifflin School District, and it affords him to move to a larger district. Soles said that he will carry a lot of lessons with him to his new position.
Soles has been with the district since 2012 when he was the principal of the Blairsville Middle-High School. In 2017, he was named interim superintendent after Tammy Whitfield stepped down, and was given the position in 2018.
