Joe Musgrove is scheduled to throw six innings in the Saturday exhibition game against the Indians. That would put him on target to start the season opener a week from tomorrow at St. Louis with five days rest. Pirates manager Derek Shelton has yet to name his opening night starter.
Shelton said yesterday that outfielder Gregory Polanco has missed workouts the last two days but he did not say why.
General Manager Ben Cherrington says he does not expect to sign anyone else for the major league roster before next week’s opener in St. Louis. He said shortstops Nick Gonzalez and Liover Peguerro will join the taxi squad in Altoona as soon as they clear their coronavirus protocols. The Bucs have two openings on the 60-man roster and Gonzalez and Peguerro would fill them if they are pronounced fit. Gonzalez was this year’s number-one draft choice and the highly-touted Peguerro was part of the return from the Diamondbacks in the Starling Marte trade.
