Should you root for the Penguins to lose against Montreal in the NHL play-in round? If they do, they will have a one-in-eight chance of winning the top pick in next year’s NHL draft.
The first phase of the draft lottery was held Friday night and a placeholder team won the first overall pick, beating out the Los Angeles Kings who got the second pick and the Ottawa Senators, who got the third pick. The Detroit Red Wings, who had the best odds of winning the top pick, fell to fourth.
The lottery included the seven teams that are not a part of the 24-team playoffs and eight placeholder teams that will be eliminated in the qualifying round of the playoffs. The consensus top pick is Alexis Lafreniere, the top ranked North American skater.
