Former Pitt football coach Johnny Majors has died at the age of 85.
Majors was hired at Pitt in 1973 and led the Panthers to the national championship with a 12-0 record in 1976, behind the legs of running back Tony Dorsett and a standout defense, and was named national coach of the year. He left Pitt in 1977 and coached the next sixteen years at his alma mater, winning three SEC championships and two Sugar Bowls. He spent the first four years of his coaching career at Iowa State.

Majors was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame as a player in 1987. He was a quarterback for Tennessee and finished second in the Heisman Trophy balloting to Paul Hornung in 1956.
