A KDKA TV cameraman who was being attacked Saturday by protesters in Pittsburgh was saved by Penguins president and CEO David Morehouse and other Pens’ employees at PPG Paints Arena. They rescued Ian Smith, who was being assaulted on Centre Avenue. Morehouse was able to drag Smith into the arena to safety. Smith, whose camera was destroyed, ended up in the hospital with a head injury and cuts and bruises after he was knocked down and stomped. KDKA reporter Paul Martino was also hospitalized after he suffered chest pains during the incident. Both were released yesterday.
The protesters burned a police car outside the arena and spray painted the Mario Lemieux statue before moving downtown and destroying more property there.
As to actual hockey news, the NHL plans to test all players daily for the coronavirus when they finally start playing again. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly says players will be tested every evening and their results will be obtained before they leave their hotel rooms the next morning, so the league will know if there is a positive test and whether the player has to self-quarantine. A single test costs approximately $125, according to the league, and Commissioner Gary Bettman estimates that 25,000-35,000 tests will be needed to get through the Stanley Cup Final.
