Penguins commentator Phil Bourque, a two-time Stanley Cup winner as a player, says that if this year’s team gets the chance, they have what it takes to win the Cup again. Bourque joined Indiana In the Morning today to talk hockey, wishing he could be going to the arena again to watch the Pens play.
He says the team constructed by General Manager Jim Rutherford is built to win, and has as good a chance as anybody.
Bourque won the Cup as a Penguin in 1991 and ’92. He says that when the Penguins do get back on the ice, they may have seventeen healthy forwards and some pretty good players may find themselves watching the playoffs.
One of the big issues when play resumes will be, if the season starts with the playoffs, players will have to be ready with playoff intensity right from the start.
The Penguins are furloughing some employees for four months. Team President and CEO David Morehouse made the announcement yesterday. The furloughs will be unpaid and start on June 1st, but the employees will continue to receive full health benefits and will be eligible for unemployment and stimulus benefits. Morehouse will be taking a 50% pay reduction, and executives and coaches will face a 25% reduction.
