The PIAA’s new competitive balance rule that is intended to make the football and basketball playoffs more fair for public schools will result in 15 schools being forced to move up a class, and not all of them are private schools.
Two teams would be forced to move up in District 6 basketball…the Bishop Guilfoyle boys and the Bellwood Antis girls.
The rule takes into account a team’s success over a two-year cycle, assigning points for reaching various levels in the state playoffs. Teams which accumulate six points then are evaluated to determine the number of transfer students to decide if they should play higher in classification. The Bellwood Antis situation is interesting since they are a public school with only one transfer player on their roster this year, and with their star players, including Alli Campbell, graduating. Transfers are not as common in public schools as they are in private schools.
All of the schools have the chance to appeal their new classification.
