This one was a no-brainer: the Steelers have picked up the fifth-year option on linebacker T.J. Watt. Under the collective bargaining agreement with the players’ union, the team had until May 4th to exercise the option. Watt had 14.5 sacks, two interceptions, eight passes defensed, eight forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries last season, when he was voted Steelers MVP by his teammates. He finished third in the NFL Defensive Player of the Year voting last season. Watt has 34.5 sacks in 63 career games and has missed only one game due to injury.
Six of the 10 undrafted free agents who agreed to contract terms with the Steelers on Sunday signed their deals yesterday. They are linebackers Leo Lewis and John Houston, cornerbacks James Pierre and Trajan Bandy, defensive end Calvin Taylor, and punter Corliss Waitman.
