Rookie defenseman John Marino is the latest Pittsburgh Penguin to sit down for the team’s weekly online chat with hockey reporters. He’s enjoying more freedom to stay in shape as he waits out the stoppage of the hockey season in Hilton Head, South Carolina, where the weather is good.
Marino says he’s able to get outside and work out, bike and play tennis, and his body is healing up from the rigors of his first NHL year.
Marino says he’s used the stoppage to look at the different elements of his game.
Asked to evaluate his rookie season, the highly-regarded defenseman says it’s gone well.
Marino says the Penguins would miss the fans and their energy if the NHL season resumed in empty arenas.
Marino says he’s learned in his rookie year that players have to take care of their bodies to make it through the 82-game schedule.
In other Penguins news, Nova Scotia native and resident Sidney Crosby yesterday offered his condolences to the families of the 19 people killed in a mass shooting Saturday night and Sunday morning. Constable Heidi Stevenson of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police was one of the victims. She is from Crosby’s hometown of Cole Harbour.
