Hospitals across Pennsylvania are losing millions of dollars because of the suspension of elective surgeries and other health care procedures due to Covid-19 and now people are losing their jobs.
Penn Highlands Healthcare has announced the dismissal of 600 employees by furlough, layoffs, and the elimination of outside staff. The employees being sent home include workers at the Penn Highlands hospitals in Huntingdon, DuBois, Clearfield, Brookville, and St. Marys.
Penn Highlands has 4,400 employees overall. The health system’s revenues are off 40 percent since the pandemic began.
The Indiana Regional Medical Center has not announced any worker reassignments or furloughs as it deals with its losses due to the pandemic.
