The Penguins’ weekly chat with a shut-in team member features All-Star defenseman Kris Letang, who fielded questions from hockey media yesterday.
Among the topics, Letang talked about how he is spending his time with his family during the hockey shutdown, the difficulties of training, and his thoughts on how the Penguins’ playoff scenario would be affected should the season resume.
Letang says he is using the time off as his summer break, because once the season resumes, it won’t be long from the end of the playoffs until next season begins.
He says it’s been hard to stay fit with no skating or gym facilities available.
The defenseman says players will have to go hard right from the start in order to get in shape for the rigors of the NHL.
Letang says teams at the top of the league going into the shutdown might lose the edge they had on lower-performing teams, which could lead to upsets in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Tomorrow will mark the one-year anniversary of the end of last season, when the Pens lost to the Islanders in the first round of the playoffs.
The NHL has announced that it is extending its self-quarantine for players and staff through April 30th, the third time the league has pushed back any potential return to action.
