The Pennsylvania Department of the American Legion says there will be no Legion baseball in 2020. That includes all of the local Legion baseball leagues and the state Regional and Championship tournaments. The announcement also states that any baseball action that uses the Legion name or logo is not authorized.
“My decisions to cancel State Police Youth Camp, Keystone Boys State and Baseball were difficult but necessary in this COVID-19 environment,” said Robert E. John, Pennsylvania American Legion Department Commander. “At this moment, our Department Executive Committee members are in the process of voting on a Resolution to cancel our Department Convention scheduled for July 16-19, 2020 in Lancaster. It appears this Resolution will be approved. All Department of Pennsylvania programs and activities are cancelled until further notice. I sympathize with all who are involved in our baseball program across the state, but I will not gamble with the health and/or safety of our players, coaches, umpires, staff, their families and fans of the sport.”
Dick Clawson, PA American Legion Baseball State Director, will join Todd Marino on Indiana in the Morning on Wednesday at 9:10 AM on WCCS AM-1160 and 101.1 FM. Indiana County Youth Legion League Managers are expected to participate in a Zoom video conference call Thursday night to discuss possible options for non-legion affiliated play in 2020 should conditions permit.
Little League currently has activities delayed until May 11th, but may soon be extending that deadline until June 1st according to sources.
This year’s Western Regional was scheduled in Punxsutawney, with the state tournament slated for Berwick.
