TENNIS
For the first time since World War Two, there will be no Wimbledon. The All England Club announced that this year’s major has been postponed due to COVID-19. It was to have started June 29th. Eight-time Wimbledon champ Roger Federer tweeted that he’s devastated. Federer will turn 39 in August and will not have many more opportunities at the Grand Slam events. The French Open had already been cancelled and a decision on the U.S. Open is expected in the next few days. The U.S. Tennis Association said it presently still plans to conduct to play the Open as scheduled, from August 31st to September 13th.
Britain imposed a nationwide lockdown just over a week ago, and officials at the All-England Lawn and Tennis Club were concerned that the grass courts at Wimbledon cannot be made playable in time to hold the tournament.
GOLF
The 2020 British Open Championship in July will be canceled, according to Golf Digest. It was scheduled for July 16th through the 19th at Royal St. George’s in Sandwich, England. The tournament is canceled rather than postponed because the Royal and Ancient, the group that organizes the open, can collect an insurance premium if it cancels by a certain date.
BASEBALL
Major League Baseball has canceled a two-game series in London between the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals because of Covid-19. The teams had been scheduled to play at Olympic Stadium on June 13th and 14th.
MLB said March 19th that it had scrapped series in Mexico City and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
