Mike McCarthy says he’s disappointed that the Steelers had to break camp early and close the books on another preseason at Latrobe, but the rain which caused the cancellation of practice yesterday didn’t dampen his enthusiasm for St. Vincent College.
In fact, McCarthy said if anything he’d like to stay longer next year.
McCarthy said his players might not like hearing it, but the chance to get away from the distractions of Pittsburgh and focus completely on football and team building is just what the Steelers need to prepare for the season.
The Steelers play the Jets in New Jersey Friday night in their second preseason game. The coach says one thing that irked him about last week’s opening game win over Green Bay was the lack of discipline, which led to eleven penalties for 143 yards, five of them personal fouls.
McCarthy says he told his team he expects better.
Top draft pick Max Iheanachor would not have practiced yesterday and is unlikely to play on Friday. He suffered an apparent neck/shoulder injury twelve days ago and McCarthy said unless he is able to go tomorrow, he will not suit up against the Jets.
